Port Sanilac, is on Lake Huron’s blue water shoreline. A historic waterfront village with scenic beaches, famous shipwrecks, and a modern harbor facility. The  Sanilac Shores Underwater Preserve has shipwrecks dating as far back as 1864, and is a treasure trove for scuba divers.

Port Sanliac arguably has the best sunrise vistas on Lake Huron.

Local landmarks include the Port Sanilac lighthouse (burning kerosene from its opening in 1886 until its electrification in 1924) and a twenty-room Victorian mansion (now the Sanilac County Museum) built in 1872 by a horse-and-buggy doctor, Dr. Joseph Loop.

Port Sanilac, Michigan is located on the west shore of Lake Huron, about 30 miles north of Port Huron,   Michigan.

Constructed in 1865 by one of the original city founders, Ward A. Jennings, the home was known as the “Jennings Mansion.”

Considered the finest home ever constructed in Lapeer, it was moved in the late 1990s to its current site, where it sits on a modern 1990s block foundation, integrated with the original foundation’s “cut block stone” veneer. The home has had only three owners over the last 155 years and is truly a “trophy Estate”.

Restoration includes:

  • Updated mechanicals
  • Updated foundation
  • Updated utilities

A ready-to-occupy residential property with pre-approved B&B zoning, the estate is a magnificent example of mid-19th Century Victorian Italianate architecture. Nearly all of its original charm and vintage character have been retained throughout loving restoration of:

  • Italian ‘Black Marble’ hearth fireplace (a unique and very rare material)
  • Deep cut crown moldings
  • Inlay and parquet hardwood floors
  • Original hand-crafted staircase
  • Copper roof treatments
  • Custom millwork and construction with 2.5” x 6” framing

  • Caretaker’s suite perfect as innkeeper quarters.

Zoning allows for B&B operations
Current residential zoning classification will allow for a bed and breakfast, owner/occupant-operated. Potential for church/reception/wedding venue. Hobby vineyard, hobby stables.

Convenient rural Lapeer site
The estate is very private, occupying a commanding location at the end of a winding and gated private driveway lined with historically-inspired lamp posts. Although secluded and wooded, it is only one mile from Lapeer’s McLaren Hospital and only a half-mile off M-24.

Furnishings are negotiable.
3% Co-Broker Offering.

Privately-guided tours with a knowledgeable tour guide familiar with the property are provided for qualified purchasers.

About Lapeer

Folklore claims Lapeer was derived from the naming of the south branch of the Flint River, which flows northwestward in Lapeer County. French and Indian traders frequently passed over this section of the county and through the river, ultimately naming the city for the stone that lay at the river bottom. In French, stone is called “la pierre”; the English pronunciation of these words gives Lapeer. The river was named Flint, synonymous with stone. Lapeer is in the Detroit and Flint market area and is on the Amtrak trail between Chicago and Lake Huron.

Lapeer, Michigan has a humid continental climate with cool to cold winters and beautiful warm summers.
