Trout fishing on the AuSable and Manistee Rivers is the big draw to Grayling, Michigan. Not to mention the hot spots along the many lakes in the area, which are also wonderful for canoeing. This area of Crawford County is a hunter’s dream. Bear, turkeys, Ruffed Grouse, fox, squirrels, and rabbits are all plentiful in these woods. Hunting without ammunition? There’s excellent bird watching to be found near Grayling. Do another kind of birdie watching on the greens at Fox Run, Grayling Country Club, Hawk Ridge Golf Course, or Forest Dunes. Biking, hiking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, skiing–all these trails are ready and waiting for you. Speaking of nature, be sure to visit again during autumn when you can fully enjoy the fall foliage, whether by canoe or by car. Interested in how Grayling came to be? Check out the various historical sites around town. The oldest documented tree plantation in North America, the W.J. Beal Plantation, is located here. There are also museums commemorating the hard work and sacrifice of two groups of men. During the Depression, there were 100,000 young men who lived in barracks around the state, working in the forests. Learn more about this at the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum. The Hartwick Pines Logging Museum holds memorabilia of Michigan’s logging era during the 1800s. River festivals, shopping, nightlife–so much more to see here in Grayling, Michigan.
