Jackson is about 45 minutes west of Ann Arbor, in Southeast Michigan. It is a town with a rich history, wonderfully preserved in its architecture, museums, and festivals. Find a favorite bed and breakfast in Jackson and return to it again and again while getting to know this fascinating little town.
Jackson was the site of Michigan’s first state prison, built in 1839; segments of the old stone facility are still visible in town. Several years later, the railroad reached the town and Jackson grew to be an important rail hub. It is no surprise, then, that the Underground Railroad also passed through here. In addition, Jackson is the birthplace of the Republican Party. Be sure to ask bed and breakfast innkeepers about the various museums in town.
Michigan’s largest Civil War reenactment takes place each year in Jackson. Featuring three battles, a civil war ball, and a crafts fair, it is a wonderful time to stay in a Jackson bed and breakfast.
Come to Jackson in July for the annual Hot Air Jubilee, when blue skies are filled with dozens of colorful hot air balloons for three days. Or head to town with a blanket in tow for the Jackson Blues Festival in June – “a Blues festival for Blues fans by Blues musicians”. It is simply not possible to miss Jackson’s Carp Carnival in June, for it may indeed be the World’s Greatest Fish Fair.
There are several good Michigan wineries near Jackson, and a wine tasting weekend is a delightful excuse to run away to a Jackson bed and breakfast. Visit at the end of June for the Great Lakes Wine Fest, where it is possible to savor wine, beer, and food from the entire state of Michigan.
When in need of a little nature, head to Cascades Park just out of town and sit by the amazing Cascade Falls. Nearby Waterloo State Recreation Area provides miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
Come to Jackson for culture or to be close to nature – it’s all here.
