Find a hotel, cabin, cottage or bed and breakfast in Mio, Michigan

Mio is in the Au Sable River Valley, in Northeast Michigan. The area between Mio and Fairview has the largest Amish and Mennonite communities in the state of Michigan. While traveling to a Mio bed and breakfast, keep an eye out for horse-drawn buggies on the roads, and groups of traditionally dressed people working in the fields.

It would be a shame to stay in a Mio bed and breakfast without admiring Mennonite and Amish crafts. An Amish store on Kettle Road features handiwork and bulk foods but relies on windows and skylights for light rather than electricity.

This being Northeast Michigan, wilderness abounds. Take a scenic drive to small towns during the fall, when the tree foliage is glorious. Enjoy hiking in Grayling State Forest Area or the Huron National Forest. Drive an hour to the shores of Lake Huron and walk on long stretches of lonely beaches.

Negwegon State Park, north of Harrisville, has undeveloped sandy beaches. Feel like the only person on earth when walking the trails of this park. Farther inland, fish for a wide variety of fish or hunt for morel mushrooms at Hubbard Lake.

The Michigan Shore to Shore Hiking Trail passes quite close to Mio. Intrepid hikers may enjoy walking from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. Stop at a Mio bed and breakfast along the way for a little pampering. Sleep in a soft, comfortable bed and eat a breakfast not cooked over the fire, before heading back to the trail.

Or simply enjoy locally grown food while out in the country. U-pick is available at several farms around Mio and Harrisville: blueberries, strawberries, corn, pumpkins…. there is something to pick summer through fall. Mio’s bed and breakfast innkeepers may be able to suggest a good u-pick farm, where guests can load up on fresh produce before heading back home.
