Union Pier is nestled between the Lake Michigan shore and the Galien River and offers a delightful blend of natural beauty, history, and relaxation.
This gem on Southwest Michigan’s Shore Wine Trail may be small, but its charm is immense. The surrounding countryside is adorned with quaint antique shops and art galleries, each with its unique story. Close to the Indiana border and Lake Michigan, Union Pier has long been a favorite travel destination for folks all over the Midwest.
Union Pier grew up across Lake Michigan from Chicago, and early residents understood that the great Midwestern city needed lumber and a lot of it. Union Pier had lumber, and while it lasted, the town thrived. Farms replaced trees; today, Harbor Country in Southwest Michigan has numerous farms and farmers markets. Find fresh produce spring through fall in farmers’ markets near Three Oaks and Buffalo Township. Or don a sun hat and head to a local farm for a U-pick.
In addition to food farms, there are quite a few Michigan wineries close to Union Pier bed and breakfasts. Many inns offer wine-tasting packages from time to time, and many wineries offer summer concerts and other fun events. If you enjoy wine at the house, you can plan a trip to Union Pier.
Antiques are everywhere in Harbor Country. Follow the Red Arrow Ride route through all the little towns near our bed and breakfasts, stop in every antique shop seen, and take home at least one unexpected treasure.
The Lake Michigan shoreline near Union Pier is largely undeveloped. Unspoiled sandy beaches stretch from Warren Dunes State Park north of Lakeside to the public beach in New Buffalo. Union Pier bed and breakfast innkeepers will be able to direct guests to the best and closest beach access. Bring plenty of food and beverages, because you won’t want to leave.
Rekindle your romantic side with a fun getaway to Garden Grove Inn. Five of the seven rooms include double jacuzzi tubs and lovely fireplaces. Reconnect with that special someone as you stand with your feet in the sand. At the same time, you experience a spectacular sunset over Lake Michigan or enjoy a delightful evening, checking out the many breweries and wineries close by.
The area offers endless foodie experiences, including eight towns with local farms and orchards that feed into the food culture. Innkeeper Hillary has many local recommendations on “Live Like A Local,” including a farm-to-table dinner at Granor Farms, enjoying the local vibes at Gather, or a romantic Italian meal at Brewster’s New Buffalo.
The Harbor County area offers a variety of activities to pique many different interests- including bike and walking trails, kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, or a faster option, the Waverunner. The inn has bikes to borrow, a beautiful way to connect with nature at a much slower pace and explore the wooded forests and beaches nearby.
Innkeeper Hillary loves recommending local breweries to her guests and fondly compares Bed and Breakfasts to Craft Breweries; both offer a more personal connection with Local Experiences instead of commercial hoteliers or home rentals. Union Pier’s own Seedz Brewery is close by and is agriculturally driven, using locally sourced ingredients. You can check out this MBBA blog to find other Michigan Breweries.
Union Pier is located within the larger area of Harbor Country, which comprises eight small towns. It is intrinsically tied to the land, first through the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, the original inhabitants of this area, and later as a popular weekend getaway destination, particularly for Chicagoans looking to enjoy the region’s beaches and forest-covered countryside brimming with orchards, farmstand, and vineyards.
You can “Live like a Local” when you taste local wines and chat with those who make them at Harbor Country’s many beautiful vineyards, wineries, and tasting rooms. All are within easy driving distance, and two wine-tasting rooms are within walking distance from the Garden Grove Inn. You can also take a self-guided tour of the fifteen area vineyards. Private charters and hop-on tours are available if you prefer not to worry about driving.
