A Little Bit Of History

Amy and her husband were intrigued about owning a bed and breakfast, especially when a friend’s B&B came up for sale. It eventually sold as a private home, but the seed was planted. Later, when the couple was playing golf at the Nahma Golf Course, they saw a neighboring piece of land for sale, on 10 acres with over 1000′ of Big Bay de Noc shoreline. A pristine piece of land with a log cabin floor plan perfect for hosting guests made the couple’s dream a reality.

Top Reasons To Stay

Experience Nahma

Nahma is a historic lumbering and sawmill community established as early as 1856. During the peak of the Big Bay de Noquet Company, the lumber industry thrived, employing over 1,200 workers. However, once the timber resources were depleted, the entire town of Nahma was put up for sale in 1951, a story that garnered national attention in Life Magazine and newspapers nationwide.

Located in Nahma Township, this area boasts approximately 68 percent (75,000 acres) of federally owned land within the Hiawatha National Forest. The township is rich in water resources, with numerous streams, inland lakes, and about 14 miles of Big Bay de Noc shoreline. These natural features, along with the recreational opportunities they provide, attract both tourists and seasonal residents. Nahma’s northern border is just 19 miles from Lake Superior.

Nahma Township is a sportsman’s paradise. The abundance of water, open public land, and diverse wildlife create an ideal environment for fishermen, hunters, trappers, boaters, kayakers, off-road riders, hikers, horseback riders, and all outdoor enthusiasts. Nestled within the Hiawatha National Forest and adjacent to over 107,000 acres of Big Bay de Noc, Nahma Township is a prime recreation destination for both locals and visitors to the Upper Peninsula. Gordon Lightfoot’s song beautifully captures the essence of Big Bay de Noc from Nahma: “Old (Lake) Michigan steams like a young man’s dream; the Islands and Bays are for Sportsmen.”
