Cartier Mansion: Best Historic Bed and Breakfast

Situated in the picturesque town of Ludington, Michigan, the Cartier Mansion has recently been honored with Newsweek’s prestigious title of Best Historic Bed and Breakfast. Ten historical B&Bs were selected by expert panelists and contributors and voted on by readers as the best of the best, with Cartier Mansion placing the coveted #1 position!

This accolade is a testament to the mansion’s rich history, exceptional hospitality, and unforgettable experiences for its guests.

Built-in 1905 by lumber baron Warren Cartier, this neoclassical masterpiece combines historical elegance with modern comforts. Guests can immerse themselves in the mansion’s storied past while enjoying luxurious amenities and personalized service. To learn more about the inn’s history, check out this MichBnB Article.

The mansion’s pet-friendly policy in the four suites in the Carriage house ensures that even your furry friends can join the adventure. For those looking to explore more of Ludington, the mansion’s sister property, the Ludington House, offers a charming and equally historic lodging option.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a pet lover, or simply seeking a unique and memorable getaway, Cartier Mansion promises an experience that will leave you enchanted and eager to return.

A stay at the Cartier Mansion is a food lover’s paradise. Many ingredients are sourced locally, including the Signature Sausage, procured from the local butcher and ground and seasoned at the inn. Ludington is located amongst many farms and orchards, and local produce and fruit are often included seasonally in the breakfast, including eggs and produce from Campbell Crossing Farms.

We recently asked innkeeper Chris to share a recipe, and we were delighted when he passed on his Ratatouille Recipe. The inn serves this with homemade toasted sourdough bread and poached eggs- YUM!

Cartier Mansion's Ratatouille Recipe

From Chris: “Here’s our Ratatouille recipe. We adjust for seasonal fresh veggies, make our sourdough from scratch, and are actually using kale oil now.”

Ratatouille

10 servings

  • 1 butternut squash
  • 1 bell pepper
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 shallot
  • 1 large can of petite diced tomatoes
  • 2 T tomato paste
  • Sourdough
  • 10 eggs
  • Parsley oil (equal parts oil and parsley)

Dice vegetables small and evenly. Cook on the stove in a Dutch oven with olive oil and salt until they start to soften. Add in tomatoes and tomato paste. Adjust seasoning. Cook until flavors come together but vegetables still have a bit to them.

Grill sourdough slices with olive oil drizzle.

Poach eggs.
