Beautiful vistas of Eagle Harbor invite you to this charming log cabin inn where your senses take you away with rose gardens, an outdoor sauna, a crackling fire in the great room, and fun-loving donkeys. Become mesmerized by antiques and fuel up with one of the best eggs benedict in Michigan.
Bring your log home fantasy to life with a stay at Dapple-Gray Bed and Breakfast. This pet-friendly B&B offers a blend of new — because this home was built to be a B&B — and old — because innkeeper Ruth has a background as a collector and dealer of antiques. Guests are attracted to the museum-quality antiques at the inn. Ruth is quite a savvy collector as she taught as a professor about antiques for 30 years including five classes on antiques; two in glass, two in ceramics, and one in antique dolls.
One view from the porch and you’ll understand why Ruth and her husband Ole were drawn to this commanding spot in the Upper Peninsula, presiding over a magnificent Lake Superior vista very close to the popular town of Copper Harbor and Eagle Harbor Township.
Pets are welcome at the Dapple-Gray, and the inn’s cats and dogs love to visit with guests.
The reviews say it all, not only about the view but also the hospitality.
For example:
“You will never find a better view, nicer (or newer) log home or house, or nicer innkeepers.
“(It’s) obvious they’ve invested a million dollars into this magnificent venture, which they share with you for the same price as a 57-year-old Ramada with a parking lot view (elsewhere).
Ole prepared the best Eggs Benedict I’ve ever had, served family-style, ladies first.”
Another review:
“Magnificent log home. Majestic Lake Superior views. Abe and their dog welcomed us to their home. Ole and Ruth were very kind and charming. We were able to visit with their family cats and dogs. Great pumpkin bread, Eggs Benedict, fresh fruit, juice, and coffee made a great start for the day. Ruth’s flower beds are amazingly beautiful. Don’t forget to look at all the antiques and doll collections. You can look for hours on end. And especially, don’t forget to greet the donkeys!”
Another review:
“Each room is a small suite with easy chairs for reading or enjoying a private moment. The large common area is centered around a huge fireplace, which was a cozy place to gather during an unexpected May snow/rain storm. If you like antiques, Dapple-Gray will keep you occupied for days looking over the collection.”
Eagle Harbor is a charming coastal hamlet located on the north side of the Keweenaw Peninsula within Eagle Harbor Township. Some of our favorite highlights of the area include:
The Eagle Harbor Lighthouse which is located at the west end of Eagle Harbor and the present brick structure was built in 1871. It is now a part of the Keweenaw County Historical Society’s Light Station Museum Complex and is open to the public. Since 1982 the Keweenaw County Historical Society has maintained four museums at the light station: a Maritime Museum in the old fog signal building, a Keweenaw History Museum located in the old U. S. Coast Guard Station garage, and a Commercial Fishing Museum located in one of the assistant keepers’ buildings. Guided tours of the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and accompanying museums take place from mid-June to mid-October. During the winter season, the exterior grounds are open for self-guided viewing.
Fort Wilkens is a popular summer attraction and is just a couple of miles from Copper Harbor. Fort Wilkens is a state park and was built in the 1880s to protect the mining industry from the Indians. During the summer it is occupied by persons who dress and act like those who were there originally. It is a self-guided tour.
Isle Royale which is 55 miles northwest of Dapple-Gray on the lake was just given the honor of being the most outstanding and popular of all of the 63 National Parks. Tourists travel by boat from Copper Harbor to the Island.
Dapple-Gray is so close to the water that you can see the big freighters go by. Also, our property has a very popular tourist attraction on the Lake, a natural geological formation called The Devil’s Washtub. The land on the Lake is a volcanic rock in which there is a large opening going down 30 or 40 feet to a pool connected to the Lake with a natural rock bridge over the opening. You could enter the pool in a small boat and then return to the Lake. Tourists of all ages jump into the pool from above! It can be dangerous and people have been injured. Because it is so popular we have not closed it off.
Guests enjoy amazing outdoor activities in the area including hiking trails, scuba diving opportunities, and breathtaking vistas of beautiful Lake Superior.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking relaxation, Eagle Harbor has something special to offer!
There’s nothing charming about shipwrecks, but you’ll learn a lot about the dangers of navigating Lake Superior and waters close to the Keweenaw when you visit the nearby Maritime Museum. And no visit to the peninsula will be complete without an exploration of Calumet, once the center of the UP’s mining industry. The village is designated as a National Historic Landmark. In fact, in the Keweenaw Peninsula, 18 different sites focusing on the copper mining days of the 19th Century comprise a national park. The area has many museums, art galleries, and shows.
The Keweenaw Peninsula is dotted with lighthouses, starting with the Eagle Harbor Light Station, which is the closest to Dapple-Gray B&B and is said to be haunted. Contact the innkeepers about the open hours and availability of tours at this and other lighthouses on the peninsula.
