What makes Oakland County so special ?
Whether you are drawn to the country vibes of a small town like Oxford or looking for an intimate place to relax at a historic or boutique Michigan Bed and Breakfast, or want to convene with nature, there are two Southeast Michigan hidden gems just right for courting romance. A short drive from Detroit, Oakland County includes quaint towns, pristine lakes, thriving orchards and farms, and hiking and biking trails galore. Two Michigan Bed and Breakfasts featured in this blog stand out as amongst the best-Maple Cove B&B and Stag’s Leap Farm, and make for a perfect romantic getaway to enjoy this breathtaking area. We also know that many travelers enjoy insider tips about the best places to dine, hike and explore- Team MBBA likes to call it “Living Like a Local,” and those insider tips from our MBBA innkeepers are included below.
Living Like a Local in Oakland County
Nestled in the affluent suburbs of northern Detroit, you’ll find the quaint villages of Oxford, Leonard, Holly, Orion, and Fenton. Both of our Michigan Bed and Breakfast innkeepers frequent these towns and know where to find the best little quirky shops or the best burgers with homemade fries, or the best orchard to enjoy a fall mug of cider and a warm donut fresh out of the oven. “Living Like a Local” and Exploring Oakland County have never been more fun or More Romantic.
Maple Cove Bed and Breakfast
What makes the Maple Cove Bed and Breakfast special?
The Maple Cove Bed and Breakfast is located in the countryside across from Lakeville Lake in Leonard, Mi, and just a short drive to Downtown Oxford. This upscale boutique bed and breakfast is open year-round and caters to adults looking for a quiet and romantic getaway.
This intimate property includes spacious suites, a quiet cottage, luxurious amenities, farm-to-table breakfasts including fresh eggs from the henhouse, and an outdoor heated pool with plenty of quiet areas to relax, including a veranda and front porch to rock life away at a much slower pace. The inn caters to brides looking for a location to get ready with their bridesmaids. It’s also an ideal location for boaters to park their trailered boat and later launch at the town’s boat ramp just across the street.
Some of the guest’s favorite breakfasts include Jan’s Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, Rolled Omelets, a Family Cinnamon Roll Recipe, and Breakfast Lasagna, which often includes fresh eggs from the inn’s henhouse.
Tips from your innkeepers at the Maple Cove B & B
When the busy innkeepers get away for dinner, their favorite restaurant is Victoria’s Wine and Dine in Oxford, and White Horse Inn is Metamora.
During the winter months, the innkeepers love to recommend having a meal and a cold brew in an igloo at HomeGrown Brew Co in Oxford. For a delicious cocktail or craft beer or to enjoy the best wine selection in Oakland County, head to Wine Social and Spirits, where you can enjoy beautiful views of Paint Creek in Lake Orion. During the fall, not to be missed is the Yates Cider Mill– a historic property and a popular destination in the fall where you can enjoy freshly milled apple cider and homemade donuts.
The inn is centrally located to many parks and hiking and biking trails, with a favorite being the Polly Ann Trail. This trail starts in Orion Township and continues northeast through Oxford, Addison, and Leonard. It is part of the Iron Belle Trail.
This intimate boutique inn fills up in the summertime-

Stag’s Leap Farm
What makes the Stag’s Leap Farm Special?
Stag’s Leap Farm, a charming and historic Michigan Bed and Breakfast, is nestled on the outskirts of historic Oxford, Michigan. This pristine retreat includes two and a half acres of beautifully maintained gardens, a waterfall, a gazebo for events or relaxing in, and natural beauty. While you’ll feel you are relaxing in the country, the vibrant town of Oxford is close by for dining, shopping, and entertainment.
This gentlemen’s farm is a dream come true for innkeepers Steven and Brett, who were meant to be hands-on innkeepers and can often be found making fresh jam or jelly and home-baked delights in the inn’s country kitchen. The pair also loves to host private gatherings, elopements, micro-weddings, and small corporate retreats on their welcoming grounds and historic farmhouse.
Romance and pampering can be found around every corner, including a welcoming fireplace in the parlor in the winter, gorgeous gardens in the summer, and a fun hen house that welcomes guests for “Chicken Cocktail Hour” in the afternoon.
Tips from the innkeepers at the Stag’s Leap Farm
These two innkeepers both have green thumbs and love farm-to-table principles. You’ll be tempted to relax on the property all day, but when you do venture out, they love to recommend Seven Ponds Nature Center in Dryden, just a half-hour drive away. The sanctuary sits on nearly 350 acres of woodlands, wetlands, ponds, and prairie and comes complete with a beaver lodge, an observation beehive, and the Hall of Michigan Birds.
If you are craving a good burger, Red Knapps American Grill in downtown Oxford is a favorite, along with great steaks, seafood, pizza, and pasta. Another specialty is Red Knapp’s own chili, served since 1936. These innkeepers share a mutual respect with Maple Cove Innkeepers for the food and atmosphere at Wine Social and Spirits, HomeGrown Brew, and White Horse Inn- so we know they are both fantastic eateries. Two other unique spots in Fenton are recommended by Steven & Brett, including The Laundry with a décor that will surprise and charm you — mismatched Mid-Century kitchen chairs and tables and other subtle touches that make the bistro atmosphere casual yet eclectic. The Laundry is known for its European-inspired cuisine, craft cocktails, and hard-to-find craft brews on multiple taps. You’ll also enjoy a stop at Crust. This baking company featured the talents of Crust’s classically trained and talented bakers and was declared Michigan’s Best Bakery and Michigan’s Best Bread honors.
And for a little bit of culture… visit the 110-room Meadow Brook Hall that was constructed between 1926 and 1929 for Matilda Dodge Wilson, the widow of auto pioneer John Dodge. Throughout the year, the museum and cultural center are open for tours. Meadow Brook Music Festival and Amphitheater is an intimate outdoor pavilion nestled in a ravine on the Meadow Brook Estate site. It is a well-known venue for contemporary music and popular artists.
Romance, pampering, and relaxation are happening thing at this delightful property-
