Take a Michigan winter getaway at a B&B

It’s time for a Michigan winter getaway — at a B&B, of course. Time for a change of scenery. Time for a break. And high time to appreciate our state’s clean, bracing air for what it is: a blessing.

Don’t merely endure a Michigan winter; embrace it. (The smart approach.) This two-minute video will nudge your attitude in the right direction:

In alphabetical order, with links to more information about them, here are the bed and breakfasts featured in the video plus some ideas for Michigan winter getaway fun while you’re staying at these inns.

Canfield House B&B, Onekama. Six guest rooms. Logs blazing in a large stone fireplace. Warm yourselves there after paddling on the Big Manistee River or taking a guided rafting trip on the Pine River.

Cochrane House Luxury Historic Inn, Detroit. Three guest rooms, two with soaking tubs, one with a two-person steam shower. Catch a game or concert at Little Caesar’s Arena, a seven-minute walk. Or, from late December through early March, ice skate under the sparkling lights at Campus Martius Park.

Goldberry Woods, Union Pier. Eight B&B rooms with two-person jetted tubs and gas fireplaces. If you tire of snowshoeing trails on the property’s 25 acres, head for nearby Warren Dunes State Park, which has miles of trails, including a six-mile section reserved for cross-country skiing.

Grey Hare Inn, Traverse City. If you want a Michigan winter getaway on a wine trail, this inn offers three guest rooms in a home overlooking vineyards you can roam. At the tip of Old Mission Peninsula, Mission Point Lighthouse is closed for tours in winter, but two adjacent parks offer 10 miles of trails for snowshoeing or hiking.

Himelhoch B&B, Caro. Three guest rooms, of which the Myer-Rosa Suite ranks high with romance-minded couples. Combine a post-holiday shopping trip to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland with ice skating at the state-of-the-art Frankenmuth Ice Rink.

Hotel Saugatuck, Saugatuck. All 18 rooms have king beds, fireplaces, jetted tubs, separate deluxe showers. Rent snow shoes and explore miles of trails in Saugatuck Dunes State Park.

Women help paddle a guided raft on the Jordan River in a Michigan winter getaway

House on the Hill B&B, Ellsworth. Eight rooms on a 53-acre property with trails and snowshoes to borrow. Book a guided rafting tour of the Jordan River, the first river in Michigan to be designated as a National Wild and Scenic River. “It feels like you’re in a snow globe,” said one of the owners of Jordan River Outfitters.

Huron House, Oscoda. Fourteen rooms with king beds and jetted tubs on Lake Huron. Reserve time in the igloo. Cross-country ski on the Corsair Trails. Return to your private hot tub at the inn.

Jade Estate Inn, Allegan. Six rooms, all named for something green. Downhill ski or snowboard at two resorts within 20 minutes. Bittersweet Resort has a ski school. At Timber Ridge, you could go snow tubing.

Maple Cove B&B and August House, Leonard. Three spacious suites and a quality-assured two-bedroom cottage. Fireplace and pool table in the common area. Let the amount of snowfall be your guide to choosing footwear for an exploration of the Paint Creek Trail (8.9 miles) or Polly Ann Trail (16.9 miles). The innkeepers sponsored a bench along the Polly Ann Trail.

Paint Creek Trail with new-fallen snow
Get out on one of Michigan’s rail-trails after a new-fallen snow and you might be treated to a pristine scene like this one, captured on the Paint Creek Trail near Leonard, Rochester, and other North Oakland County towns. You’ll experience only slight changes in elevation on most Michigan rail-trails, and snow drifts will be less of a problem in forested sections. (Photo: Paint Creek Trail)

Nordic Pineapple B&B, St. Johns. Seven suites, five with jetted tubs. Fill all the rooms with your friends, and ask the innkeepers to stage one of their clever, original Murder Mystery Weekends. (Plan in advance.) Or go hiking or fat tire biking on the Fred Meijer Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee Trail, which runs through St. Johns.

Robyn’s Inn, Plymouth. Five rooms, including two Carriage House suites with king beds and fireplaces. Get your exercise on the trails at Hines Park, a 19-mile ribbon of green space along the Rouge River. Another good option for trails is Maybury State Park, which, for the adventurous, even has a mountain bike trail.

You’ll find information about lots of great things to do and see in a Michigan winter at michigan.org.

With the prospect of deluxe beds, fireplaces, great breakfasts, super-clean accommodations and more, your Michigan winter getaway will be all-around much cozier and more memorable if you stay at quality-assured, MBBA-member bed and breakfasts.  No matter where online you find the perfect getaway B&B, always #BookDirect on the inn’s own website for best service and selection of rooms and dates.

Some B&B innkeepers will even brush the snow off your car.
