Michigan's Northern Lights
In talking about Michigan’s Night Sky Charms, we must mention the fantastic Northern Lights in Michigan. The shot above was taken by the innkeeper at the Spring Lighthouse from their back patio- nothing short of amazing. Have you wondered how these magnificent lights occur?
The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are a spectacular natural phenomenon that can be seen in Northern Michigan, especially in the Upper Peninsula. Here’s a brief explanation of how they occur:
Solar Activity: The sun emits a stream of charged particles known as the solar wind. During periods of high solar activity, such as solar flares or coronal mass ejections, the number of these particles increases.
Earth’s Magnetic Field: When these charged particles reach Earth, they are drawn towards the poles by Earth’s magnetic field. This is why the Northern Lights are typically seen in high-latitude regions.
Atmospheric Interaction: As the particles collide with gases in Earth’s atmosphere, they excite the gas molecules, causing them to emit light. Different gases produce different colors; for example, oxygen emits green and red light, while nitrogen emits blue and purple light.
Viewing Conditions: Northern Michigan is an excellent location for viewing the Northern Lights due to its dark skies and minimal light pollution, especially along the shores of Lake Superior12. Popular spots include the Headlands International Dark Sky Park and Port Crescent State Park3.
Experiencing the Northern Lights in Northern Michigan is truly magical.
